Schooling is one of the priorities in Myanmar. Education would bring some whealth, and rational changes in the way Burmese society is run.

However, although being recipient of some humanitarian aid, Myanmar does not receive much of the infrastructural funds that many developing countries see. This is part of the problem associated with a dictatorial military regime, and with the status of being one of the two largest producers of opium in the world.

Socially responsible tourism, volunteer teaching, or even discussions with youth and donations-in-kind during a visit (even better if the goods are donated to trustwhorty organizations such as local NGOs offices or religious organizations), are already first steps. Look out for students approaching you on Mandalay hill - most of them genuinely want to practice their English, and might even invite you to "give a lesson" at their school. While caution is always good, we encourage you to do it. One of the informal schools (run by a helpful monk) is U Nyanissara, Ye Kan Kyaung, Man Aung Taik, at the end of 27th st., near 62 Road, Chan Aye Thar Zan Township, Mandalay. Have more details in our "what you can do" section.
