Nandi, the oxen that carries Hindu gods on his back, has gained the respect of all Hindus. 

But oxen are not merely "worship material" in India. Of course they must not be killed, which helps preserving them for the future without succumbing to immediate needs. But like cows they are widely used as muscular power in labour that would be performed by machines elsehwere. 

A family that owns one is a well-off one. And when the time of celebration comes, they are decorated and even brought into important temples.
