Goa was an outpost of Portuguese trade until annexed by India. A large portion of the population is Christian, and names are often Latin-sounding. The region is less densely populated than the rest of India, and as a result less poor and instable. As soon as you leave the beaches, a much less-touristed reality becomes apparent. Street vendors become peasants, and sands turns into wheat fields. But Goa hosts some intellectual talents too, and is one of the most active centres of social debate. For a taste of what information technology could become if aimed at alleviating poverty in India, see www.bytesforall.org. You can also have more details in our "what you can do" section. |
