Theoretically, children in India are entitled to education. In a country where 400 million are totally illiterate and tens of millions are barely able to read and write, this is both essential and difficult to implement.  Especially in poor families, children are put to work as soon as possible, and girls' education is traditionally considered as a lower priority. Ethnic strife between Muslim and Hindu communities, exacerbated by the raising of Hindu nationalism that brought the BJP party to power and a parallel surge in Muslim's acrimony, are substantial barriers to school attendance in mixed-ethnics areas.

Various NGOs are attempting to solve the problem, such as in the case of Hope India. This child is enrolled in primary school in a Muslim-Hindu area in Bangalore. The school is funded by the Indian arm of Hope International (www.hopeww.org), which caters to the literacy (including computer skills) of a few hundreds children and adolescents. Have more details in our "what you can do" section.
