This soldier is a relic of a bygone era, when the British rule (the "British Raj") was seconded by a number of local dignitaries who compromised with its might. Now their beautiful palaces have lost any political significance, and there is no local militia anymore. However, India does have an army, and a very large one too. The percentage of national wealth that goes into the armed forces is one of the highest in the world. The army is heavily engaged on the Kashmir front, on a never-ending dispute with Pakistan, and closely watches the Chinese border too. The last government, as well as a few before, stresses the importance of maintaining a strong military to prevent unwelcomed action by its neighbours. India's military might is a defining concept for Indian nationalism too. A way, perhaps, to sway attention from a long list of pressing social issues. And a finger dangerously too close to the trigger, in a country where elections are often a display of emotion rather than logical democratic decision-making. It is essential that the international community, and each of of us, tries to reframe the debate into a more logical one. This can be done at many levels, from talking to people to urging governments and NGOs to act. Have more details in our "what you can do" section. If you are interested in the roots of India's national identity, you can also read "The Idea of India".
