The Hutong are the traditional neighborhoods, those still built in wood and stone. Once a landmark of all Chinese cities, and in particular of Peking, they have been eroded by modernisation in most of the country. The very idea of progress professed by Mao, and to a lesser extent by Deng, denied the value of these reminders of the past.

During and after the Cultural revolution (when Peking's marvelous city walls and thousands of temples were rased), and during the recent transition to market economy, traditional China has lost out.

Cities like Lijang and Xian still offer a glimpse of what thousands of years of Chinese society looked like. We believe it is important to see them, and to demonstrate with responsible tourism the interest of preserving this legacy of a past that belongs to China and to the world.
