A tamed hawk with his master evokes feelings of balance and respect between man and nature. But this is highly misleading: the treatment of animals in China is not necessarily a respectful one. Out of necessity, or sometimes out of traditions, animals are used as tools, food and toys.

It is a strong bond. The "soft" side of the relationship, traditionally visible in the ownership of dogs, cats, birds and grasshoppers, attracted persecution during the Cultural Revolution in the '50s and '60s. Pets in general and dogs in particular were banned because the Communist Party saw them as a "weakening agent" for the people's soul. For a poignant description of those practices read Tiziano Terzani's "The Forbidden Door".
