HOME SHOTS FROM THE FIELD NEWS WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT US AND CONTACTS	This virtual exhibition (best seen with Internet Explorer) narrates the story and the life of common Afghan people through a combination of compelling, arresting pictures and non-fiction content. The narrative vision is centered on “taking the reader for a stroll” in Afghanistan in the first decade of the new millennium – and dig into the story of Afghanistan reflected in the faces of the people that would greet her or him. The Afghan portraits (about 50 black and white pictures) act as a backbone and were taken in November 2003 in Kabul and Afghan countryside. The no-nonsense concise and evocative text (around 50 pages) pulls together facts and succinct analysis, providing an engaging social, economic and political angle, a view of the historical and current situation and a sober call to action. Afghanistan does have a story to tell, and the portraits of the Afghans, like a ravaged modern Mona Lisa, reveal some of it. The main issues explored are poverty, education, health, war and history of social strife, religion and social customs, narcotics production, daily life in a hostile environment, and their impact on children and women. Against this human backdrop, the role of international help in the reconstruction is discussed. Ultimately, the exhibition seeks to help the Western reader visualize Afghanistan, and feel a call to action. Socially conscious audiences, including and especially those who do not have a formal knowledge of sociology, economics and political science, should find this book insightful, informative, and engaging. And of course the photographic “silver lining” will facilitate another, more immediate reading path and an incentive to dig deeper.
